— FIRST IMPRESSIONS —
APPEARANCE Hector has tanned skin and wavy silver hair worn in a bob. Blue-grey eyes (that now glow bright blue when he casts spells), deceptively built (he has muscles from forging). He's around 5'10"ish.
CLOTHING He tends to wear blacks, blues, and grays, usually with a red sash around his waist that is a hold-over from his childhood. He's used to fantasy-medieval styles, and likes a tall boot and a mid to long tunic with pants. He usually keeps gloves nearby for protection when he's forging.
DEMEANOR Hector is reclusive. He doesn't seek out social interactions for their own sake, but he's willing to strike up a conversation about topics that interest him- magic, philosophy, science, pets, etc. When he does speak up, he's usually sarcastic and frank as a defense mechanism. He's not interested in softening his words to keep the peace. As a Forgemaster, he has an aura that some find off-putting.
AURAL Youtube clip here. Voice acting by Theo James. Hector's voice is rather deep and smooth.
OLFACTORY He's from a medieval time period, but he also lived with Dracula for a while so anachronisms abound. He tends to keep himself clean when he's able, and he probably mostly smells like whatever he's been working most closely with at the time- corpses, old books, magical components.
— SKILLS —
This is where you can put the skills/powers/magic your character might have before entering the game!
Devil Forging The skill for which he was recruited to Dracula's army. Hector can 'forge' (relatively fresh) corpses into Night Creatures (basically, monsters). The bodies he creates become a vessel for a soul from Hell, and are not considered 'undead'. It's a new life form, comparable to the naturally occurring Night Creatures that exist in their universe.
Necromancy Rather than forming a corpse into a new creature, Hector can simply revive it instead. With humans, it creates a zombie. With animals, it creates a reanimated pet.
Blacksmithing Hector has the skills to forge his own magical tools, and, theoretically, other mundane objects as well.
Magic Aside from his necromatic powers, Hector can create magical barriers/cages using runes, and has an understanding of other magical rituals and procedures.
— RUMORS —
  • Either a necromancer or a frogcromancer
  • Keeps visiting Alucard down in the cells. What's going on with that?
— PETS —
  • Constantine the reanimated frog, best boy familiar
  • Telawel the reanimated desert fox
  • Lil Cezar & crew- various dogs of Hector's past in his Horizon

IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Hector
Canon: Castlevania (Netflix)
Canon Point: between Season 3 and Season 4
Background: wiki link

Suitability:
In Season 3, Hector hit rock bottom, then hit some additional rocks he didn't know existed down below. From there, he had nowhere to go but up. In the time between Season 3 and Season 4, we find out that Hector has 1. grown up enough to admit that he fucked up pretty badly 2. decided to make amends (in the most roundabout way possible, by releasing Dracula from Hell. It seemed like a good idea at the time), and 3. taken steps to betray the Styrian Sisters using his magic. To the surprise of his primary captor (and also the audience), Hector finally proves that he can be competent, clever, and sneaky within his narrow focus.

While Hector would like to be able to just go off and be a hermit, he knows that his powers make that unlikely. He'll form alliances/join a faction by necessity (probably based on whoever makes the best impression on him). In his heart, Hector is a man of science, not a warrior. He'd prefer to aid in the faction's efforts through research or creation of soldiers through his forging ability rather than directly fight himself. He's not a leader, but he's a competent subordinate if a leader can convince him to listen. Hector's a little harder to win over now than he was a year earlier in canon, but if someone is sufficiently charismatic, flattering, and appeals to his logic, he's still likely to get on board.

Powers:
-Devil Forging: The skill for which he was recruited to Dracula's army. Hector can 'forge' (relatively fresh) corpses into Night Creatures (basically, monsters). The bodies he creates become a vessel for a soul from Hell, and are not considered 'undead'. It's a new life form, comparable to the naturally occurring Night Creatures that exist in their universe.
-Necromancy: Rather than forming a corpse into a new creature, Hector can simply revive it instead. With humans, it creates a zombie. It can retain some of the abilities it had in life (a priest he animates is able to bless a river, for example), but is seemingly unable to act independently of Hector's control. It is unknown if the soul is still present. More often, Hector prefers to revive animals as pets. Since animals don't have 'souls', the process seems to work better. His pug, for example, acts like a normal puppy that just happens to have been dead for a while. His pet revival process is probably technically a subset of the Devil Forging's 'creating new life', but without fundamentally changing the body, so it's more a reanimation than a forging of a new body.
-Other Magic: This one is kept more under wraps, but Hector is also shown as being able to perform magical spells/rituals outside of his Forging. Using enchanted objects, he creates force fields that are capable of containing vampires and night creatures. He has a strong enough understanding of magic to be able to devise a ritual to revive Dracula, and reverse engineer the binding ring used on himself for Saint Germaine to create one of his own.
-Actual Blacksmithing: Hector has the skills to forge his own magical tools, and, theoretically, other mundane objects as well.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
I've already mentioned above how Hector reached his lowest point during Carmilla's imprisonment and Lenore's magical enslavement, so let's talk about how Hector got mixed up with vampires in the first place.

Vlad "Dracula" Tepes met Hector at some point during his travels, seeking him out to learn about his powers. Hector recalls this moment fondly. It was the first moment anyone had really acknowledged the value of his work. It was certainly a turning point for him. He'd been living in isolation in a cabin in the east of Rhodes, content to make pets and test his power. At the time, Dracula approached him without ulterior motives, just as a fellow scholar interested in Hector's studies. Until that point, Hector's magic had been met only with scorn and fear, so this moment of validation was so impactful that Hector would later be willing to leave his isolation and help commit genocide at Dracula's behest. Hector was so starved for connection and approval that he stayed by Dracula's side even when he began to see that Dracula was mad with grief and trying to do a murder-suicide with the entire world.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

Hector's moral code is more of a loose suggestion. He knows he is not a moral or good person, and doesn't really try to be. What he is not is cruel. He doesn't seek to do active harm to anyone who doesn't pose a direct threat to him. He lived peacefully in Rhodes for years before he left to become a general in Dracula's army. When he is conducting the campaign, he's removed from the actual fighting, only seeing the corpses that get brought back to him as fodder for new creatures. He tries to take steps to subdue humanity as quickly and decisively as possible in order to minimize the destruction and suffering, but he still DOES THE THING. He agrees to Dracula's plan so long as the remaining humans are treating 'humanely', but doesn't object to people being treated like livestock until HE gets treated like livestock in Season 3.

As for people who threaten him, Hector has no compunction against killing them. His parents are the first casualties. They abuse him and destroy his pets, so he burns their house down around them. The faceless concept of 'humanity' has rejected him, so he can be persuaded to side against them and send his Night Creatures to destroy their cities. Hector doesn't want to start shit, but he loses no sleep over FINISHING it.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Hector would say that the most admiral quality is intelligence. He is incredibly smart, and loves for people to know it. (Common sense is a different story.) Hector respects people who are well-read or clever (like Dracula and Carmilla when he first meets her) and sneers at those he sees as dumb or uneducated (Godbrand, the unwashed peasants of Wallachia). Offers of money or power mean nothing to him, but tempt him with a book of vampire philosophy and he'll fall. He is hungry for a companion with whom he can discuss his readings and the intricacies of his work, which the Vampire Sisters exploit to entrap him.

However, even more than intelligence, the trait that Hector gravitates toward without realizing it is kindness. He's so desperate for it that he'll jump for any scraps he can get. Dracula compliments his work- he'll betray humanity for him. Carmilla pets his dog- Hector decides to trust her plan. Lenore calls him pretty and takes him on walkies- yes, he'll hop into bed with her. In his mind's eye, Hector acts logically and dispassionately, but in reality, so much of how he responds to people is dependent on how nice they are to him and his pets.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Growing up, Hector's mother told him he came out "wrong". There was some quality about him that people could sense even before his necromatic powers manifested. This led to him withdrawing from society and surrounding himself with reanimated pets in place of friends. Hector tries to fill the void with his work, but those echoes of his mother's curses still haunt him. Part of the reason he is so easily able to detach himself from the rest of the world and side with vampires is this perception of himself. He tries not to care, but at his current canon point, he has enough hindsight to begin to realize that his 'wrongness' and the loneliness that stemmed from it has left him open to manipulation.

What is their sign, and why? The MAGICIAN- Hector has devoted his life to his craft, and prides himself on his mastery of it. People come and go, but his magic remains his constant companion. Other characters in the series seek to reshape the world or destroy it or save it; what Hector desires more than anything is to just be left alone to do his work. He lacks any whiff of ambition except when it comes to learning more or creating new and more interesting things.

Hector thinks of himself as a reasonable, logical necromancer person in a superstitious world. In reality, he is childish, and lacks understanding about the nuance of human interaction, preferring to relate everything into terms he can better understand- the natural world. He loves animals and used to literally raise pets; how you treat his dog will shape how he views you.

Hector is a reactionary character, lacking ambition in every aspect except for his 'work'- forging new creatures or raising dead ones. When left to his own devices, he isolates himself from people and surrounds himself with undead animals; when someone he trusts (or who knows how to manipulate him well) tells him what to do, he complies, without much examination into his actions.

There is a lot of cognitive dissonance going on in Hector. He disdains humanity, but doesn't want to cause suffering. He creates an army to help Dracula take over the world, but lets himself believe it is for the greater good in spite of the growing evidence that it is not. He won't take direct action to harm someone unless they first threaten him, but by creating the army that ravages Wallachia, his body count is countless.

In terms of his interactions with others, Hector is frank and can be sarcastic. For those few people he respects, he is willing to share his thoughts and trust in their judgement above his own common sense. For everyone else, they get sarcasm and sass. Hector is usually willing to talk about his work, but otherwise, he'd much rather ignore others. He is an introvert with trust issues, but in his isolation, he still thirsts for approval and direction, which is why he follows first Dracula, and then briefly Carmilla.

HISTORY
Hector was the son of an alchemist, who wanted his son to follow in his pursuit of wealth and power. Hector used his innate magical powers to raise dead animals and bring them home as pets. This horrified both of his parents, who (re)killed the animals and beat Hector. As they traveled for his father's work, Hector was also rejected by locals as well, who could sense something off about him.

When he was still a child, Hector locked the doors to his house and burned it down while his parents were still inside so that he could run away unpursued. He traveled and studied his craft, and settled in the east of Rhodes, where he lived in seclusion.

While traveling the world as men do, Dracula heard about a necromancer living in Rhodes and sought him out. He and Hector bonded over magical theory, and Dracula became the first person to ever see the potential of Hector's work, which won Hector's loyalty. When Dracula returned to Wallachia to find his wife had been burned as a witch, he returned to Hector to ask for his help in creating an army to enact his revenge. Hector insisted that the people Dracula conquered be treated 'humanely', and agreed.

Hector served as one of Dracula's two human generals during the campaign that followed. He forged creatures that could house souls from hell to replenish the dwindling number of naturally occuring night creatures. However, Dracula's madness caused Hector to question the plan, leaving him susceptible to Carmilla's manipulation. Carmilla lured Hector into her coup d'etat, and though her plan failed due to the interference of Sypha, Trevor Belmont, and Alucard, she ended up taking Hector captive as a consolation prize.

BONDS

Everett Vaughan: Hector's fellow faun. Mentor turned lover, the first person Hector has ever truly loved. They currently live together.

Trevor Belmont: Hector's worldmate. Originally, they had a tense relationship, but after Hector became a blood donor, they shared more emotions than intended and hooked up. Now bonded with feelings???

Leslie: Temp bond. A bond of mutual convenience to make sure neither party suffers from not having a witch/monster bond. Hector is fond of Leslie, but worries that he isn't a suitable longterm solution for her.

Character Information
Name: Hector
Canon: Castlevania (Netflix series, with some background info filled in with the Curse of Darkness game and manga series)
Canon Point: Prior to the invasion of Bralia
Age: early 20s
History: Neflix version wiki and Curse of Darkness version wiki

Given that the animated series has pulled and combined aspects of several of the games, I have listed out a few of the aspects of his early life that the game/manga detail that the series hasn't focused on or has only alluded to so far:

-Hector's father was an alchemist who moved his wife and child around as he pursued wealth and power through his magical abilities. Hector, rather than following in his father's footsteps, uses his innate power and the alchemist skills for necromancy. (Manga, with some hints in the animated series)

-In the manga, his early power manifests as the ability to communicate with animals (he is actually hearing spirits/demons). What I am taking from this is that he was able to sense the presence of recently departed spirits, like of the dead dog he is seen raising in the flashback in the animated series.

-He is shunned by the superstitious villagers, who view him as a devil child, and feared by his parents. (manga, also supported by the game)

Where the manga/game differ from the animated series:

-In both versions, his parents are killed by a fire. In the manga, the fire is started by the demons/animals Hector communicates with, either through an unwitting use of his power or through the demons intervention on what they consider Hector's behalf. In the animated series, it is more explicit that Hector lit the fire that killed them. I am going with Hector being the one who knowingly lit the fire so that he could escape from them.

-In the animated series, Hector spends the time between the fire and his coming to Castlevania in his early twenties as a hermit (in the manga, he is led to the castle as a child and actually grows up there). He wanders until he settles on an island east of Rhodes, living in a remote cabin, spending his time reanimating dead creatures until Dracula recruits him.

Personality:

Hector is, first and foremost, a reactionary character. With his powers, he has the potential to rule the country, lead an army, etc; he does not because he has no ambition or desire to. Basically every action Hector takes in because someone else first acted. As a child, he lashes out and burns his parents' house down with them still inside because they destroyed his pets and beat him. As an adult, he becomes a Forgemaster because Dracula fetches him out of the woods and tells him to forge. Carmilla tempts Hector into betraying Dracula; without that push, Hector would have continued to watch Dracula deviate further and further from his 'subjugate the humans' plan without doing anything to change course. The only drive Hector has is 'his work'. When left to his own devices, all he wants to do is make and care for his pets. This leads to the more ambitious and devious minds around Hector using him as a chess piece in their wars.

Hector thinks of himself as a very logical, cool-headed individual, but in actuality, he has a child-like point of view. Growing up, humans hurt him; therefore, all humans are evil and deserve to be controlled. One vampire was kind and supportive of his necromancy; therefore, vampires are a higher form of intelligence and can be trusted with the fate of humans. Carmilla (a ridiculously-evil vampire general) is obviously thirsting for Dracula's throne, but she is nice to Hector's dog- obviously a trust-worthy lady. Having removed himself from society and lived apart from people from his youth, Hector does not understand people. He tends to relate situations and interactions in terms of animals because that is what makes sense to him. He learns by the end of the series, to his detriment, that humans and vampires are not predictable in the way that animals are.

Though he cares nothing about the power that comes from his abilities, Hector is a very driven worker. He loves his work, whether it be raising dead woodland creatures or forging horrific monsters from hell. What he lacks in ambition, he makes up with creativity. In the series, Hector is shown making a variety of different forged creatures- for the task force he sends to the Belmont Estate, there are five distinct monster types. This is further illustrated in the game, where Hector has 6 types of Innocent Devils he can forge, with various subtypes the player can evolve; the game's version of Isaac has two. Isaac is always set up as Hector's foil in the series. Isaac focuses on creatures that do great damage, and sticks with what works. Hector, on the other hand, has a wider variety with applications in and out of combat. His goal is on pushing his powers to the limit and discovering what new things he can create.

Hector is on the evil side of the war, but in terms of his actual evilness ranking, he's at best a 6/10 (according to the official Netflix showrunner's calculations). Hector is fine with the idea of subjugating humanity and treating them like animals, so long as they are kept in humane conditions. The plan he was recruited to enact was to punish those responsible for the death of Lisa of Lupu, and then to seize control of Wallachia. As Dracula's bloodlust grows, Hector tries to redirect their attacks to return them to the original plan so that they don't cause unnecessary suffering. He opposes the new plan of 'kill everyone', but does not know how to stop it or to extricate himself from the situation. When left to his own devices, Hector prefers to avoid other humans, but does not seek to harm them. He's content to live in the woods with his pets.

His love of animals is what softens and humanizes him in the series (but also leads to him being manipulated). His laboratory is filled with revived animals that he has restored to life. He shows obvious love and affection for his undead pug, Cezar, and his reactions to the people around him is directly influenced by how kindly or cruelly they treat his dog. As a child, Hector risked beatings in order to raise animals because he wanted to care for them and give them a second chance. The only clear flashback we see of him is him finding and reviving a dead dog to be his pet, which we find out results in his parents beating him and destroying the dog. It is implied that he learned nothing from this and tried again at least a few more times, to similar results.

When Dracula sells him on the plan (of seizing control from humanity), he phrases it to Hector as taking control away from humanity for their own good, and treating them more like livestock. In Hector's mind, this is both the kindest and most logical option. Humans kill one another and (the setting being the Middle Ages) actively stifle learning, which spreads chaos, fear, and disease. He envisions the vampires as taking on the role of shepherds, guarding and cultivating a flock, who really need the leadership. Yes, the shepherd sometimes eats the sheep, but there is no cruelty in the relationship and the benefits far outweigh the costs. Hector sees nothing 'evil' about treating people like animals because he personally treats his animals with affection and kindness, and assumes everyone else does to.

Abilities & Skills:
-Necromancy*: Restoring life in varying degrees to the dead. This is more easily achieved with animals. For humans, they come back in more of a zombie state; animals, at least Hector's pets, seem to retain more of their personalities.
-Devil Forging*: Using a mixture of conjuration and alchemy, combining dead parts with magic to create monstrous creations. In the show, they are inhabited by spirits of hell and have their own wills and drives (though they can still be ordered by their masters). In the game, they are 'Innocent Devils' that have no spirit of their own, and are driven entirely by the will of their creator.
* Note- I am bringing him in as a Faun, so he will no longer have access to these powers, to his deep despair.
-Fighting: Hector uses a hammer as a weapon. In the show, he has not yet been seen fighting, but it is assumed that he has at least some skill with the hammer as a weapon. (In the game, Hector has proficiency in multiple types of weapons.)
Biology and Anatomy: As a necromancer, Hector has studied the natural and supernatural world and has a robust knowledge of the anatomy and inner workings of the life forms he has worked on. He knows how to repair and how to piece together parts into a new and horrifying whole.

Inventory/Companions:
-Hammer: he typically uses it as a focus for his magic, but it can also be used as a melee weapon
-A handful of coins: silver ducats minted near Rhodes, they are scuffed and bent from early use as a means of generating a necromatic spark of life
-red sash: he always wears it. What a goof.
-Cezar: a small black pug, undead. Very friendly, overly trusting, too cute to live. He has exposed bone in two places: on the right upper side of his skull (where his eye socket and ear would be) and on his front left paw. Because he has been revived by Hector, his remaining eye glows blue.

Choice: Faun
Reason:
Transformation into a faun would suit Hector in that he would be at home in the wild and in tune with nature. His instinct is already to avoid a physical fight rather than engaging. Narratively, having Hector turn into part-sheep would be poetic justice for someone who thought humanity would be safer in the hands of a shepherd.

Stripping him of his necromatic powers also makes Hector vulnerable in a way he hasn't been since he left his parents, which is a fun angle to play.

Plant Research

Hector's Research:
Comparing samples of moss from the ruins at the northern outpost to the moss in the Undergrounds (this will be done once that location opens ICly)

Trying to see if the moss from the northern ruins can absorb life forms the same way that the dream-underground moss did:
-Different versions include-feeding the moss a dead life form (probably a mouse or something similarly small and easy to obtain), a live uninfected life form, and a live infected life form. This would be done in one of the abandoned shacks outside of the city to avoid having to get infected test materials past city customs.

-Note- if animal test subjects don’t work, Hector is not above trying to steal a human or monster body from a graveyard to test if the moss will absorb a corpse.
He would also try to plant some of the moss in a local cemetery as well as his home garden to see if it grows better in places of death or life.

Mod Response:
Currently we cannot say much about the Undergrounds' moss except that gathering samples of it will be tricky! They're very protective of it down there, and the Mirrorbound will have to build good will and rapport with the city before they will allow it. However, the ruins' moss is readily accessible so experiments on it are possible at any point.

He will find that the Ruins' Moss taken as-is or raised from spores in sunlight will not consume other organisms living or dead, infected or non, although in living infected animals, it can still be fed to them and used as an antibiotic for low-level infection.

Raising his own from Ruins' spores entirely in a dark, damp environment will result in a different sort of moss, however. It will not be exactly like the Underground moss; it will be much more fragile, almost like lace and easily torn, and it will not be able to grow much bigger than an average small houseplant, even with careful raising. It will be able to envelop and partly feed on small, infected insects or particularly tiny mammals, dead or alive, although living prey can overcome the moss and shred it in their struggles. Exposing this moss to sunlight at any point will seem to make it grow better, but even a minute of sun will cease the nomming behavior. Growing this moss will take two months at least, even helping it along, but this research is bound to be of interest!

As far as growing the moss in a cemetery versus his home garden, it will seem to take to the grave dirt somewhat better, possibly because of the dead organic matter in the soil. Particularly nutrient-rich soil full of compost will have a similar effect, though, so it doesn't have to be people-corpses, apparently.

Hector's Research:
Litha-Flowers- an ongoing attempt to make the ‘7 flowers under the pillow’ tradition more efficient. Hector is going to attempt to gather one of each of the flowers and use their pollen to cross-pollinate until he gets a new bloom that theoretically contains elements of all 7. He doesn’t believe in the divination properties of the flower, but making a frankenflower is a fun challenge.

Mod Response:

Bond-Club Meme

In a book club, you get together, try out a book you might not normally try, and then discuss. Well, get ready for Bond Club!

Here’s the premise- characters in the market for a bond can come, meet up with others who are also looking for a bond, and if they hit it off, they give it a try. Take a temp-bond potion for a day and see if things click. If they do, they can give it a try in the game proper (or collectively decide to make the meme thread game canon).

Having trouble getting started? You can also post in the Randomize Me section to have your character paired up with another Mirrorbound. It’s truly a way to try out a bond you might not have otherwise considered.

Randomization will be done by Lark in batches of 6-10 (depending on the demand). If you want another random bond, you can reply to the randomizer again and be matched in the next batch if space allows.

Name: Who are you playing?
Choice: Witch or Monster (and type)

IC
About me: A short description about the character. What do you bring to the bond?
What I’m looking for: Love? Friendship? Purely a business arrangement? Someone to garden with? What’s the ideal bond look like for you?
Deal-breakers: Must love dogs, can’t be a snorer, etc. What things must someone do/not do in order for a bond to work for you?

OOC
Notes: Any warnings, requests, preferences etc that you want to put out there that your character wouldn’t say?
